Chai, my friend, is on the other YM window and she’s insisting that we push through with this blog. She’s stoked on this whole concept of Atenean FOBS (Fresh-off-the-boat, a rude term for folks who just got here) documenting their (mis)adventures in Los Angeles, California. And I can’t blame her. Since we got here, we never really had a chance to sit down and contemplate on things. As far as we know, our existence has been reduced to monthly pay checks and we wonder whatever happened to the idealistic, pseudo intelligent college graduates that we once were.

Life happened, that’s what. Between our Theology handouts 3 years ago and our credit card bills today, Chai and I have gone through stuff we never thought we’d go through, because how could we? In college, Fr. Dacanay taught us three levels of conscience, and at the time they made perfect sense. On the other hand, conscience had not much use back in college except when restraining from premarital sex (which didn’t really work either). The real test of conscience, we feel, is discerning whether you should disclose your full taxable income to IRS, or considering marrying a citizen to get a green card. These become real issues once you’ve tasted dollar bills—these along with dilemmas in career, politics at work place, and (dare we say it) love life.

From Free Will to Free Way—really, does the concept of fundamental option still count these days? We’ve made a lot of decisions, forking through different roads and tapping new networks—sometimes good, sometimes bad, but when you look back, you'd see that most events have nothing much to do with choice—they all boil down to survival and pleasing of the immediate senses. At night (if we have time) we wonder what happened during our day, and we discover both everything and nothing. Either way, we have no way of gauging how well we fared. We are on our own, far all the way out here, in what they call the land of the free way.
